Play Therapy
Our play therapy services support children, aged 2-12, through ongoing therapy, delivered by qualified, registered clinicians committed to ethical, connected care.
At Dynamic Connections Therapy, play therapy is a developmentally appropriate, evidence-based approach that uses play as a child’s natural language. It provides a safe, supportive space for children to explore feelings, build emotional regulation skills, and strengthen confidence — all without pressure to perform, talk, or “get it right.”
When families first reach out, one of the most common questions we hear is: “What therapy does my child need?”
Often, the more important question is: “What does my child need first?”
For many children, that first step is play therapy.
Play therapy can help children who are:
Anxious, worried, or overwhelmed
Experiencing big emotions or frequent meltdowns
Having difficulty with behaviour, transitions, or routines
Navigating grief, trauma, or family changes
Struggling with social skills, confidence, or friendships
Through play, children learn to:
Express feelings safely
Build emotional regulation skills
Increase confidence and resilience
Strengthen problem-solving and coping
Improve relationships and communication
When a child is anxious, overwhelmed, emotionally dysregulated, or holding experiences they don’t yet have words for, starting with play therapy helps create the sense of safety and regulation they need before moving into other therapies, such as occupational therapy, speech therapy, or psychology.
We often see that once children feel calmer, more secure, and more connected through play therapy, they are better able to engage in learning, skill-building, and therapeutic goals later on. It’s not about doing more therapy — it’s about doing the right therapy, at the right time.
For many children, play is where that journey begins.
